The Bad

The Lantern Coffee Cart
POST: The Lantern coffee shop shuts down at 1:30pm and stays closed till the next day. While the library stays open until midnight. It should open again for a bit late at night, I need a late night caffeine fix.
REBUTTAL: If we think about it in economic terms, it is likely unprofitable to have the lantern cafe open after 1:30 PM. More than likely, most of the cafe's income must come from staff and faculty.
Construction on campus
POST: UC Merced makes the term "Under Construction" into a way of life. However the construction workers are oddly polite.
REBUTTAL: Under construction is a term with such negative connotations. Everything starts from the ground up, instead of complaining we should be contributing to the construction of the University. As cheesy as it sounds, this University is going to shape itself to the mold we set up.
Policies and Procedures
POST: Policies, procedures, and requirements can change from semester to semester; and often do.
Core 100 Class
POST: Core 100 a class every Junior level studet must take, worse part is attendance is taken.
REBUTTAL: Yes Core is broken, but its a good chance to get indepth knowlege on something that has interested or bugged you in the past.
Entertainment
POST: Entertainment venues are limited in the Merced area.
REBUTTAL: Students often depend on each other to stay entertained, thus close knit relationship that can last a lifetime are quickly established.
Population
POST: Cows outnumber people in Merced county.
REBUTTAL: Cows are cute...and tasty.
Post: Don’t expect to live in a metropolitan.
Environment
POST: The air quality is dire.
REBUTTAL: Several of my friends and I have this same problem, and I am from LA. One word: "loratadine" (a.k.a. Clratin). That is the best advice i can give you.
REBUTTAL: Student can work with researches to help improve air quality.
Transportation
POST: Public transportation is limited.
REBUTTAL: As the pool of students grows the University expands it's CatTracks services to include areas of high student density.
REBUTTAL: Well I disagree with this point. There are the Modesto and Fresno airports as well as the Amtrak station here in town.
POST: Be extremely careful when walking through the parking lot, especially before class starts. Students drive extremely fast through the lot and tend not to stop at obvious intersections, yield the right of way, of follow common driving courtesies.
Sports
POST: NCAA sport teams are far along in the future.
REBUTTAL: The students of today decide which sport team UC Merced will compete in. Many sports-related clubs have been established, some compete with other colleges and universities. Contact Campus Recreation for a list of sports programs.
