Small Classes
POST: UC Merced has all the benefits of a UC, but with the small class sizes of a private school.
Rebuttal Small class size is great, but it also creates an impression that high school is being experienced all over again.
POST: Many of my friends at other UC’s complained they felt like they were being herded around or like they were nothing but a number.
POST I feel like UC Merced is a more individual experience, many of my professors, TAs, and counselors know me by name and that’s kinda nice.
Class Selection
POST: If there is a class that you need for some reason and it is not offered the counselors can arrange for an independent study or if enough people need that class they can make that class for an upcoming semester.
Faculty and Staff
POST: This school may be new but there are some great professors here.
Rebuttal Sometimes you just can't avoid a professor and their course.
Activities and Entertainment
POST: The city is dead. I know that, you know that, we all know that. Your peers understand each other so making friends is easy.
POST The city is expanding. Yosemite Lake hosts many activities in the spring and summer. You can enjoy many water sports. In the meantime, there is plenty to see outside of Merced within a 1-hour drive such as Yosemite National Park, Modesto, and Fresno. San Francisco, Sacramento, Stockton, Oakland, Carmel, Monterey are just less than a 2-hour drive. There are two active airports - one in Merced and one in Atwater at the former Air Force base. Scenic Airlines flies out daily from Merced to Las Vegas.
POST: The Sierra Nevada Mountains are within view on a clear day.
Employment and Internships
POST: An ever-expanding campus needs an ever-expanding work force. Getting an on campus job is relatively easy.
POST Stop by the Career Services office in the Gold Wing of the Library by Students First Center. Phyllis, Leslie, and Kelly can assist you with an on-campus job, internship, or externship.
Environment
POST: There's lots of wildlife here on campus. On any given day one can see a falcon, bunnies, snakes, coyotes, and even "bobcats".
Rebuttal: However, air quality in the Central Valley is poor.
History in the making
POST: Opportunities to be part of history are unlimited.
POST: Innovation is unlimited.
Rebuttal: Students often wish to be part of an institution that is well established.
Housing
POST: Off campus housing is affordable.
POST: On campus housing features apartment style dorms.
